It doesn’t matter what age we live in; there are some universal principles that are always true and absolutely effective for everyone and anyone. Whatever we do in life, these principles always lead us to success.
- What is your goal? Know your goal and focus!
Nobody can do a lot of things at the same time. You can do it for a few days perhaps, but you get tired and begin to slow down in the long run. Therefore, either in personal or in professional life, set your goal carefully, and focus on it, a few at most at a time.
“Your own positive future begins in this moment. All you have is right now. Every goal is possible from here.” – Lao Tzu
- Remember that success is not chance, but you have to prepare for it!
People often forget that success that appears to come overnight often has a background of years. When you begin to build a skyscraper, you don’t start putting one brick on another, but you dig a huge and very deep foundation first. So, if you want to rise up, you have to go down first!
“Success is a choice!” – Rick Pitino
- You don’t live to make money; you make money to live!
Don’t lose yourself to make more money all the time. Quality and prestige brings money, and you create them through your hard and meticulous work. However, money doesn’t bring quality and prestige all the time. Yes, money is a good tool to use to achieve your goals, but remember, it’s just a tool!
“Money doesn’t change people; it just shows who really they are!” – Anonymous
- Don’t waste your time with useless things!
You can’t always get quick results from everything you do, but you can always do things that will gain you something or make a contribution to the world. Read: you gain knowledge, and knowledge is a treasure you can never be robbed of. Help others: when you help others, you help the universe, and even if that person doesn’t appreciate your efforts, universe always does. But forget about the pop culture, forget about the conformity. Choose carefully what you watch on TV. See your time as an investment for creating value all the time; even your playing times!
“Don’t count every hour in the day, make every hour in the day count.” – Anonymous
- Health is essence!
If you’re not healthy, you can do nothing! Even if it’s not terminal, you still get distracted when you have simple headaches. Sleep well, eat well and balanced, keep exercising, and rest properly. You can’t work 24/7. More importantly, you want to enjoy your success when you achieve your goals, right?
“Among the common folks, the most valued thing is the state; however, there’s no single state around the world like a healthful breath!” – Suleyman The Magnificent; Ottoman Empire
- Have an organized and neat lifestyle!
Discipline, organization, and focus are essential when it comes to achieving goals, and becoming successful. However, unless you have a healthily neat lifestyle, you can’t have these three, either. You can’t be productive without discipline; you can’t focus when you don’t know what is what or where is where in your life; and you can’t have these when you don’t organize your life and time. It doesn’t matter if you’re married or single; you have to have a well organized and neat life!
“It was character that got us out of bed, commitment that moved us into action, and discipline that enabled us to follow through.” – Zig Ziglar
- Enjoy your success when you achieve your goals!
You worked hard for it after all, and you earned it, right? When you achieve a goal or a subgoal, congratulate and reward yourself, and take a little time to enjoy it. But don’t lose yourself to comfort of it, either. Pat your back properly, rest a while, and then get back to work again, because success is not a destination, but a way of life! You have more goals to achieve, right?
“Celebrate your success and stand strong when adversity hits, for when the storm clouds come in, the eagles soar while the small birds take cover.” – Anonymous
- Know the difference between the difficulties and failure!
Of course you will face difficulties along the way; it wouldn’t be called success otherwise, would it? But the obstacles you have to overcome are not the failure itself. Remember, you’re defeated only when you accept the defeat. As long as you keep standing up and walking, you will reach your destination someday for sure.
“It’s not how hard you hit. It’s how hard you get hit, and still keep coming. Get up!” – Rocky Balboa / from the movie Rocky VI.
- Examine the people who are already successful!
Whatever your line of work is, pick some role models who are already successful in what you do or want to do. Examine their lives, behaviors, attitudes, habits, and copy them. I’m not saying you should become their Xerox copies, but you must learn from them and their experience. They already walked the way you want to walk, didn’t they? You don’t need to rediscover the wheel!
“We artists are, naturally, the spiritual and behavioral teachers of the society. You can’t say your art is separate from the way you act in front of people, because you reflect your personality and values in your art inevitably. And beware, because youth is looking up to us!” – Selim Yeniceri
- Whatever you want to do, cooperate with those who are best in that business!
You set goals. You want success. Okay. But if you want success, you have to be the best you can ever be, right? So you have to surround yourself with people who are best in what you want to achieve. Learn from them. Cooperate with them. Work with them. Forget about what most say today as if it’s a norm: rivalry wastes your time needlessly, but cooperation and synergy help you create more and more value than you can do on your own. As I often say, you have to give first if you want to take. Give to take, learn to teach, follow to be followed!
